Kersen Logue was an African American educator, civil rights activist, and social justice advocate who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Kentucky. Born into slavery in 1833, Logue overcame tremendous adversity to become a leading voice for education, equality, and opportunity for all Kentuckians.

Early Life and Education

Kersen Logue was born into slavery in Scott County, Kentucky, in 1833. His parents were slaves, and he spent his early years working on his master's farm. Despite the limitations imposed by slavery, Logue had a thirst for knowledge and a determination to learn. He taught himself to read and write, and he eagerly sought out any opportunity to expand his education.

After the Civil War, Logue attended Berea College, one of the few schools in the South that admitted African American students. He graduated from Berea in 1874 with a degree in theology. Logue's education at Berea was transformative, and it gave him the tools and knowledge he needed to become a leader in his community.

Civil Rights Activism

After graduating from Berea, Logue returned to Scott County and became involved in the civil rights movement. He was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Kentucky, and he worked tirelessly to fight for the rights of African Americans. Logue spoke out against lynching, segregation, and other forms of racial discrimination. He also worked to improve educational opportunities for African American children and to promote economic empowerment within the black community.

In 1882, Logue led a group of African American farmers in Scott County in a protest against the unfair treatment they were receiving from white landowners. The protest was successful, and it helped to raise awareness of the plight of African American farmers in Kentucky. Logue's activism continued throughout his life, and he remained a vocal advocate for civil rights until his death in 1923.

Education and Social Justice

In addition to his civil rights activism, Logue was also a dedicated educator and social justice advocate. He believed that education was the key to empowering African Americans and to breaking down the barriers of racism. Logue taught at several schools in Kentucky, and he also founded the Logue Industrial School in Frankfort in 1893. The Logue Industrial School provided vocational training and other educational opportunities for African American students.

Logue also worked to improve the lives of African Americans in other ways. He helped to establish the Kentucky Colored Orphans Home in Frankfort, and he was a strong advocate for health care and other social services for African Americans. Logue's work helped to make Kentucky a better place for all of its citizens.

Legacy and Impact

Kersen Logue died in 1923, but his legacy continues to live on. He is remembered as one of Kentucky's most important trailblazers, and his work helped to pave the way for civil rights and social justice in the state. Logue's story is an inspiration to all who believe in the power of education, activism, and social justice.

There are several ways to learn more about Kersen Logue and his legacy. The Kentucky Historical Society has a collection of Logue's papers, and the University of Kentucky has a special collection of materials related to Logue and his work. There are also several books and articles about Logue's life and work.

Kersen Logue was a true trailblazer who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and equality. His legacy is a reminder that one person can make a difference, and that we all have a responsibility to work towards a better future for all.
