History of Southern Comfort
Southern Comfort was created in 1874 by Martin Wilkes Heron, a bartender at McCauley's Saloon in New Orleans. Heron was looking for a new and unique whiskey to serve his customers, and he experimented with a blend of bourbon, whiskey, and brandy. He added fruit, spices, and herbs to the blend, and the resulting drink was an instant hit.
Heron named his new whiskey Southern Comfort, and he began selling it at McCauley's Saloon. The whiskey quickly became popular throughout New Orleans, and it was soon being sold in bars and restaurants across the country.
In 1889, Heron sold the Southern Comfort brand to the W.A. Taylor Company. The Taylor Company continued to produce Southern Comfort in New Orleans, and the whiskey continued to grow in popularity. In 1933, the Taylor Company was acquired by the Schenley Company. Schenley continued to produce Southern Comfort in New Orleans until 1972, when the distillery was moved to Louisville, Kentucky.
In 1987, the Schenley Company was acquired by Diageo. Diageo continues to produce Southern Comfort in Louisville, Kentucky, and the whiskey remains one of the most popular American whiskeys in the world.
The Production of Southern Comfort
Southern Comfort is made from a blend of bourbon, whiskey, and brandy. The bourbon and whiskey are aged for at least two years in charred oak barrels. The brandy is aged for at least three years in French oak barrels.
After the bourbon, whiskey, and brandy have been aged, they are blended together. The blend is then flavored with fruit, spices, and herbs. The exact recipe for Southern Comfort is a closely guarded secret, but it is known that the whiskey contains peaches, oranges, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
Once the whiskey has been flavored, it is bottled and allowed to age for at least six months. This aging process mellows the whiskey and gives it a smooth, rounded flavor.
The Taste of Southern Comfort
Southern Comfort has a sweet, fruity flavor with hints of spice and herbs. The whiskey is smooth and easy to drink, and it makes a great sipping whiskey. Southern Comfort can also be used in a variety of cocktails, such as the Southern Comfort Manhattan and the Southern Comfort Old Fashioned.
