Elementary Modern Standard Arabic (EMSA) is the standardized variety of Arabic used in formal writing, education, and media throughout the Arab world. It is based on the classical Arabic of the Quran and pre-Islamic poetry, but it has been modernized and simplified to make it more accessible to learners.

EMSA is not a spoken language, but it is the foundation for all spoken varieties of Arabic. Learning EMSA will give you the tools you need to communicate with native speakers from any Arab country.

History of EMSA

The history of EMSA can be traced back to the 7th century AD, when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The Quran was written in Classical Arabic, which was the language of the Quraysh tribe of Mecca.

After the Islamic conquests, Classical Arabic spread throughout the Arab world and became the language of government, education, and literature. However, over time, the spoken varieties of Arabic began to diverge from Classical Arabic.

In the 19th century, a movement began to standardize the written Arabic language. This movement was led by scholars from Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon, who wanted to create a unified language that could be used by all Arabs.
