Brothers At Vimy Ridge: A Tale of Valour and Sacrifice
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the most important battles of World War I. Fought in April 1917, it was the first time that all four Canadian divisions fought together as a single corps. The battle was a success for the Canadians, who captured the ridge from the Germans. However, the victory came at a great cost, with over 10,000 Canadian soldiers killed or wounded.

Among the Canadians who fought at Vimy Ridge were two brothers, John and Alexander Currie. John, the older brother, was a 22-year-old private in the 49th Battalion. Alexander, the younger brother, was a 19-year-old private in the 52nd Battalion. Both brothers were from the small town of Sintaluta, Saskatchewan.
The Currie brothers were both experienced soldiers. John had fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Alexander had joined the army in 1915 and had fought in the Battle of Ypres in 1917. Both brothers were well-respected by their fellow soldiers.
On the morning of April 9, 1917, the Currie brothers and their fellow soldiers attacked the German lines on Vimy Ridge. The fighting was intense, and both brothers were wounded. John was shot in the chest, and Alexander was shot in the leg. Despite their wounds, both brothers continued to fight. John led his men forward, and Alexander provided covering fire from a nearby trench.
As the battle raged, John and Alexander Currie found themselves separated. John was with a group of soldiers who were trying to capture a German machine gun nest. Alexander was with a group of soldiers who were trying to clear a German trench.
John and his group reached the machine gun nest, but they were met with heavy fire. John was shot again, this time in the head. He died instantly.
Alexander and his group reached the German trench, but they were also met with heavy fire. Alexander was shot in the chest. He died a few hours later.
The Currie brothers were two of the over 10,000 Canadian soldiers who were killed or wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Their story is a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the men who fought in World War I.
The Currie brothers are remembered today in the town of Sintaluta, Saskatchewan. A monument to the brothers was erected in the town square in 1921. The monument bears the inscription: "In memory of John and Alexander Currie, who gave their lives for their country in the Great War." The Currie brothers are also remembered in the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France. The memorial bears the names of the over 11,000 Canadian soldiers who were killed or wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
