Zero Hour: A Novel of the Somme
By Dan Snow
Zero Hour is a novel by Dan Snow that tells the story of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in human history. The novel follows the experiences of a group of young British soldiers as they prepare for and then go over the top into battle.
The novel begins in the trenches, where the soldiers are living in squalid conditions and enduring constant shelling. The men are all from different backgrounds, but they are all united by their fear of what is to come. As the zero hour approaches, the tension mounts and the men begin to make their final preparations.

When the whistle blows, the men go over the top and into no man's land. They are met with a hail of gunfire and artillery shells, and many of them are killed or wounded within seconds. The survivors press on, but they are quickly overwhelmed by the German forces. The battle is a disaster for the British, and the men are forced to retreat back to their trenches.
Zero Hour is a harrowing and unforgettable account of one of the most tragic events in British history. Snow's writing is vivid and immersive, and he does an excellent job of conveying the fear and chaos of battle. The novel is a powerful reminder of the horrors of war, and it is a must-read for anyone interested in history or military fiction.
